One out of three people will suffer a traumatic injury during their lifetime. SFGH has the only Level 1 Trauma Center available for the over 1.5 million people living and working in San Francisco and northern San Mateo County. The SFGH Emergency Department is a 24-hour service licensed by the State of California and fully accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO) as a Comprehensive Service Level I department to provide emergency and trauma care. San Francisco General Hospital provides 24-hour comprehensive emergent, urgent and non-urgent care to 65,000 adult and pediatric patients annually.
Level I Trauma Program
The Level I Trauma Center was established at San Francisco General Hospital in 1968. The Level I Trauma Center at San Francisco General Hospital is the ONLY Trauma Center in the City and County of San Francisco. In addition, the Trauma Center is the provider of Trauma care for the Northern portion of San Mateo County and thus has a service area of 1.5 million people. In 2003, the Trauma Center treated over 3,000 trauma patients.
The center is staffed by outstanding faculty from the University of California at San Francisco who conduct research to improve patient outcomes through surgical techniques, care modalities, and injury prevention. Unique programs include the Traumatic Brain Injury Program and the Orthopaedic Trauma Center.The San Francisco Injury Center is located at San Francisco General Hospital .
